Leon Hockham, our head coach, has been running since he was a child. He was inspired to run by his father, who was an accomplished road runner, fell runner and orienteer in the 80s. Leon has a scientific approach to coaching and this is facilitated by the fact that he is both methodical and has a background in science. He has a Bachelor of science degree in Biology and a PhD from the University of St. Andrews. As well as being an accomplished scientist, having published many papers, in peer reviewed journals, Leon is also an accomplished runner.
Like most people, Leon started off running on the roads, doing shorter races, but quickly discovered that his passion was for long distance trail and fell running. He has successfully competed in many ultramarathons including runs up to 100 miles.
Leon prides himself on attention to detail and he utilises these details to ensure that training programs are not only tailored to a runners’ current level of fitness, but also to their training experience and personality. He believes in a flexible approach, making sure that training plans can be changed and modified, if life gets in the way. Leon has coached in schools and at club level and on a 1:1 basis. He is a licenced UKA athletics endurance event coach, level 3. Leon has experience in 5K road races up to 24 hour fell running challenges, such as the Six County Tops and the Bob Graham Round. He has supported athletes on The Paddy Buckley Round, The Bob Graham Round and The Ramsay Round. He is currently training to complete his own Bob Graham Round. Whatever your running ability or aspirations, Dr Leon Hockham will provide coaching and advice that will help you achieve your goals and become the best that you can be.
